What is Epidemiology?

  • Epidemiology is the study of disease distribution and of the determinants of health and disease in human populations.
  • A principal aim of epidemiological studies is to determine how and why disease rates vary among populations and to identify the factors associated with increased risk of disease so that they may be targeted by appropriate interventions.
  • Study results are interpreted within the context of available information and data in order to critically assess the weight of evidence.
  • Public health epidemiology aims to apply epidemiological methods to public health issues.
